Yes, I do this too, but never stopped to think about how others might do likewise for their passion. Great observation!

A very true observation.

I think it changes depending on your medium of choice; my writer mind is always at conflict with my photographer mind. I'll look at something and half my brain will say "That would make an amazing photo." whereas the other half will say "How could I describe this the most evocative way?".

It would probably be the same for a painter, a sculpter, a movie director...etc

In the end though I think these observations we write into our brain will emerge in our medium at some point.

Cheers for the inspiration. I have a competition with a deadline tomorrow that I want to enter and my story still isn't finished!

As for pulling the words out of a hat, it reminds me of the Dada method of poetry, and seems like it would be equally applicable to writing a story. Or least provide a starting point for one.

No coincidences. I’ve long believed in that.

The post I put up on Sunday was a spare I had to use due to unforeseen circumstances that involved a lot of cat urine and some soft furnishings.

In not one, but two striking coincidences, I both flicked onto tonight’s episode of Australia’s Got Talent, and I caught the dying seconds of a performance by none other than Natasha Hoeberigs, one of the stars of the NSW School’s Spectacular.

Don’t believe me? Check this out;
Tonight’s Australia’s Got Talent:

Natasha in the School’s Spectacular:

I guess this means I need to vote for her. Is this one of those voting shows? If so, vote for her! :-)

I completely understand that. I have been spending a lot of time in my garden too and it is taking all my creative energy. Gardens are fantastic for creativity, fresh food, fresh air, exercise and just general enjoyment, so have fun with it. I am sure as you say the novel writing will start again soon.

By the way just started my new blog - acoffeechat.blogspot.com - and have made yours the first blog I follow.

"(hot tip for any new fantasy writers out there; females whose only purpose is to be rescued is not a good selling point for a book)"

While I agree with you completely - If anyone gets rescued in my stories it's usually a guy - there are a few examples out there of very popular series where it seems all a girl is there for is to be kidnapped over and over.

The example I'll give is Doctor Who. I've never really gotten into it myself, probably because of the terrible attitude towards women, but that is one show that thinks women only have one purpose.

I'm in agreement with the rest as well; unless something specific has caused a name change (i.e. combination of different cultures blending together), people need to either change all or none.

Oh, you've mentioned Robin Hobb and I am so madly in love with her books. Currently listening to Mad Ship as an audio and desperately trying to figure out who I've lent my hardcopies to. Have almost succumbed to buying the e-book! But not quite...

I agree with you regarding the importance of worldbuilding... and in fact I have a planned post on the very subject for Wednesday - although from quite a different perspective.

Hmmm, re karv... I think I know the book you mean... I too wondered what it tastes like!

Tell me about it, I've selected the Australian date convention in my set-up but the template I've picked won't let me push it out. Grrr. Maybe I need to get creative and work on my own template?
